Hasn't been the case for around 8 years. Now there is just a world border at ±29,999,984 on each direction. You can mod the game and remove the limit, and then the actual max distance is ±2,147,483,647 to each direction, but it's just stops generating new chunks instead of glitching out. 2 more replies.

The default has been tested extensively by the developers and will give a good, balanced experience. Each radar has a limited range ( 7x7 chunks edit: 29x29 chunks ofc) and adding more radars nearby just makes scanning faster. P.S. And island preset is, unfortunately, a single large island.
