Weirdly enough, Harry's is by far the best thing I've found so far for head shaving. At least, for getting a smooth head very quickly/easily. Most other razors irritate my head at least a little, but Harry's don't at all. I shave every 2-3 days, though, so maybe that's why my experience is so different.

Maggard Safety Razors are cheap and highly recommended for beginners. I strongly recommend this starter kit. The Parker 26C is exceptionally comfortable (disinclined to nick) and efficient, and at $29 is not out of sight. First, splash and then balm. I typically prefer unscented balm but ymmv. I tend to do either/or, mostly by scent or at random. If I have a lot of razor burn I tend toward a balm. If it's very hot or humid, I stay away from thicker, oily balms. Lighter "aftershave milk," gels, etc work fine in any weather for me.

I've looked at youtube videos for the past week on the Lansky, KME, Edge Pro and the Wicked Edge. From what I can tell most people prefer the Lansky for its price. The KME got overall good reviews. The Edge Pro didnt seem to favor well with some because of its holding system where it slides around.
