A big part of it is also luck. I scored like 8-10 points lower on Step 1 than predicted and the opposite happened for Step 2, where I scored 8-10 points higher than predicted. One aspect is luck and just trying to prepare yourself for your weaknesses as best as possible because they might attack you on Step day (like embryo did to me for Step 1).
