The name Minnelusa Sandstone was given by Winchell (1875, p. 38 and 65) to rocks on the west side of the Black Hills in the valley of Cold Spring Creek. The limits of the formation were redefined by Darton (1901, p. 510) as the top of the Pahasapa Limestone of Mississippian age and the base of the red mudstone of the Opeche Formation.
